December 2008 Newsletter
So its December and it certainly feels like it ! Right now, the thought of jumping in the water isn't very appealing, but who knows what some hardy IPSAC divers will do come New Year's Day ... ?! In the meantime, we're continuing with the over-water social events; we kicked off the Dining Club activities in October and these will continue through the coming months. Our AGM also took place, as well as a very successful Try Dive evening resulting in some new trainees. |
Update ... what has happened in the club since the last newsletter
End of Season Meal | ||
This year's diving season was rounded off with the traditional curry at the Golden Bengal in Swanage. I'm told that a good time was had by all ! Thanks to Nick for organising the evening. |
2008 Annual General Meeting
Our AGM took place on 10th October at Durlston and was well attended. Once the formal business of the meeting had taken place, we all tucked into a buffet, it was a good opportunity for everyone to catch up and have a natter. Thanks to Robin for the use of Durlston. |
Try Dive | |
We held our try-dive evening on 18th October and 7 people came along to have a go with scuba gear. As usual, thanks to all the club members who made a big effort to make the evening a success, either on the night itself or by spreading the word.. putting up posters and so on. As a result, we have three new trainees who we welcome to the club ! |
October Monthly Meal | ||
There was a big turnout for our first monthly meal get-together at the Duke of Wellington. We'd not tried this venue before, but it was a huge success, with many favourable comments about the food. The specials were indeed that ! Little room for pud, though some managed to squeeze one in ! Thanks to everyone who came along. |
Fireworks on Poole Quay
Despite it being a damp evening, a few of us gathered on Poole Quay for a couple of beers, followed by the firework display. Have to say that it didn't live up to expectations; perhaps we're just spoiled by the Swanage displays ! Still, was worth a try, so thanks to those that came along. |
Games at the Black Swan | |
Unfortunately the planned games evening had to be cancelled; the dreaded lurgee descended and so we decided to postpone till another time. |
IPSAC Calendars | |
The Calendars have arrived and will be handed out at the Christmas party; thanks to everyone who's ordered one, we hope you'll like them, and its raised some money for club funds. |
Up and Coming ... details of forthcoming events
Christmas Party | ||
Our festive get together will once more be at The Lookout at Durlston on Friday 12th December. Besides the great food, company and atmosphere, the IPSAC Oscars will be returning and we also hope to have a slideshow of photos and film clips both old and new to entertain you through the evening. We've had a great response this year, over 30 members coming along, so should be a great evening ! |
New Year's Day Dive | ||
As most of you know, its a great IPSAC tradition now for some of us hardier members to don our dive gear and jump off the pier on New Year's Day. Admittedly, there's not been very much to see in recent years, but it provides entertainment if nothing else! Details of times will be sent nearer the time, so just bear this in mind when you're seeing the New Year in the night before ! Here's a picture of last year's brave trio; let's see who's up for it this year ! |
January Monthly Meal | ||
Just in case you haven't eaten enough over the Christmas break, we've got a monthly meal get together pencilled in for Wednesday 14th January. Having recently heard good things about The Castle Inn in Corfe, we thought we'd give them a go; its the pub on the left as you drive out of Corfe on the way to Swanage. If you'd like to come along, drop us an e-mail; I'll be sending out the usual reminder nearer the time. |
Star Gazing Evening | ||
We're planning an evening gazing at the stars in the new observatory at Durlston on Thursday 29th January. Robin is kindly organising the evening and Alan Jefferies will be telling us all about the stars ! This date has been chosen to coincide with the new moon; obviously, we're hoping for a clear night but it may be that we have to cancel at the last minute and rearrange for the following evening if we should 'lose the sky' which I am reliably informed is the astronomer's jargon for an overcast night! |
Dive Coordinators | |
For all you Dive Coordinators-to be, keen to learn what its all about, don't think you've been forgotten; Chris will be organising an evening covering all aspects of dive coordination sometime in the new year. |
Underwater Camera & Comms
There are plans to have DWT's underwater camera and comms kit available at several of our pool sessions so that members can become familiarised with the equipment. Hopefully this will mean that by the time the Under the Pier Show comes around, we'll have some people ready to use the kit properly and even provide underwater commentaries ! So keep an eye out for the kit at the pool during January. |
Visit to Weymouth Coastguard
Advance warning of an event we're planning for February; a visit to Weymouth Coastguard for a tour of their facilities, biased specifically for us towards diving. Numbers will be limited; watch out for more details in the February Newsletter. |
